Discover the physics, chemistry and biology of water bath canning so that you can become comfortable with the process and the theory behind it. The workshop will cover canning theory, equipment, recipe selection, sourcing supplies and of course, hands on canning for everyone to take home! This workshop will have an additional component especially for producers who want to make preserves a part of their value added product line. We will cover costing/pricing, regulation and some marketing in the final hour of the day. Suitable for all skill levels.

Mushroom Cultivation

Learn all about cultivating mushrooms with Bruno Pretto and Paula Vopni of Fun Guy Farm and Mycosource Inc.

This workshop will give you an overview of indoor and outdoor gourmet mushroom cultivation for home and commercial purposes. We will cover log management techniques, material selection, log inoculation, laying yards, soaking tanks, sprinkler set-up, fruiting set-up, harvesting and storage, and how to incorporate your logs into the garden landscape. You get to inoculate your own log with Pioppino or Shiitake spawn to take home at the end of the day. We will also discuss the nutritional value of mushrooms and have tasting samples at lunch; free recipes will be available. Mushroom-related books will be offered for sale. FGF Farm Tour - Livestock and Grains in Grey County

 Everdale's Farmers Growing Farmers program is hosting farm tours of livestock and grain operations at Bows Bells and Grassroots Organics - Sunday, April 25, 2010


We will all meet at Bows Bells in Markdale (about 2 hours north-west of Toronto) at 10:45 am for a morning tour led by Les Richards. Les manages over 100 acres of grain and hay production for his year-round sheep operation. In the afternoon, we will head to Grassroots Organics where Sean McGivern will show us around his farm where he raises a variety of livestock and rotates grain production and milling on about 1500 acres.The tour will focus on livestock housing, care and pasturing, and grain/feed production. There will also be plenty of time for questions!

Please pack a lunch which will be eaten at a farm in the area. The last tour is expected to end by 4 pm at latest.

As we will be in barns and animal yards, rubber boots are recommended for participants. Also, for biosecurity purposes, please bring along 2 pairs of plastic bags for covering your boots at each farm.

FGF Farm Tour - Greenhouse tours of Cookstown Greens & Kestrel Farms

Everdale's Farmers Growing Farmers program is hosting farm tours of Cookstown Greens and Kestral Farms.

We will all meet at Cookstown Greens at 9:45 am for a morning tour led by David Cohlmeyer. In the afternoon, we will head to Kestral Farms where Peter Vanderpost will show us around his operation. Both Cookstown Greens and Kestral Farms practice season extension techniques and market their vegetables to restaurants as well as the general public. The tour will focus on current greenhouse and season extension production and provide lots of time for questions.

We will break for lunch at one of the farms, so you will need to pack a lunch. The last tour is expected to end by 4 pm at latest.

Biodiesel 101

With Greg Lougheed of Lougheed Biodiesel. Greg has been making biodiesel for over 4 years and is now working as a consultant.

Spend a day with a master biodiesel maker. Greg will cover feedstocks, one and two stage biodiesel reactions, required equipment, biodiesel quality, vehicle compatibility, cold weather issues, manufacturing, water usage, methanol recovery, disposal of wastes.  Greg will also show the titration method of testing the quality of waste vegetable oil. This is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to start working with biodiesel. Whether you just want to learn more so you can decide whether or not to use biodiesel, or you want to make your own brew, this class will help you get underway.

 Tea and coffee will be available at this workshop. Please bring your own lunch- and a travel mug if you have one!

Instructor: Krystal Gardiner, who has been making soap for 5 years and enjoys sharing her love and passion of the soap making experience with others.

You don't have to be a chemist to make natural soap. All you need is a few ingredients and the will to create something special and beautiful. Learn the art of making all natural vegetable, cold process soap. Using simple kitchen tools with everyday ingredients found right in your kitchen cupboard, you will discover how easy soap making can be. The goal is to create a mild soap that cleans and moisturizes without any synthetic intrusions.

Whether you choose to make soap for your own personal use or for gift giving, you will no doubt be hooked after your first batch. Krystal will also introduce the history and science of soap making. You will go home with 7 bars of soap that you create.

Please bring an old bath towel. All other materials will be supplied.
